Development of Interior Behavior Identification System Using Pressure Distribution Sensors
-Fundamental Research of Behavior Identification System for Detecting Depression-

Takuya TAJIMACTakehiko ABE and Haruhiko KIMURA

This study aims to develop an indefinite complaint detection support system using pressure distribution sensors. The indefinite complaint causes symptoms of feeling heavy-headed, feeling irritable, feeling tired, having bad nights, etc.. If the indefinite complaint goes into a decline, the patient will suffer depression. In Japan, the number of the patients with depression was over a million in 2008. Moreover, this number continues to increase. Therefore, it is said that the depression is a national affliction. In this study, the system detects the indefinite complaint by everyday physical movement states in a person's house. This system uses panel-like pressure distribution sensors. The sensors are placed in the bedroom, dressing room, kitchen, entrance, etc.. These sensors collect everyday moving states data, and the obtained data is converted into a person's life pattern data. It is known that the patients with indefinite complaint or depression have low activity levels. The patient's doctor or family can see the person's activity levels using this system, and they can detect potential problems. For example, potential problems may be that the patient cannot do outdoor activities, cannot eat, cannot get to sleep, cannot wake up, cannot take a bath, etc.. This system monitors the patient's moving states, life patterns and conditions. Therefore the doctor or family can help the patient as needed.
